Nottingham Forest legend Garry Birtles says the return of Nicholas Randall as chairman is a “wise move” for the club following the departure of Tom Cartledge.
Forest announced on October 1st (Tuesday) that Cartledge would be stepping down after 15 months in the role, although he will remain on the board of directors.
Nicholas Randall KC was immediately named as his successor. He was formerly Chairman at the club from 2017-2023, following the takeover led by Evangelos Marinakis, and had retained a role on the board after Cartledge’s appointment in 2022.
Birtles, who made 212 appearances for the reds, welcomed Randall’s return while appearing on Notts TV’s TeamTalk on Wednesday (October 2).
He said: “Only the people involved will know what’s going on, I’ve seen the reasons that Tom Cartledge has stepped down, it’s his business and you can understand that.
“We all know what a great job he (Nicholas Randall) did, from the Championship to the Premier League.
“We know he’s tried and tested and he does the job brilliantly for me, so I think it’s a wise move bringing him back in.”

Winning two European Cups in 1979 and 1980, Birtles was a vital component in Brian Clough’s famous ‘Miracle Men’, starting both European finals.
Randall began his first run as Chairman as the club was acquired by Evangelos Marinakis in 2017 and oversaw the club’s promotion to the top division in 2022 for the first time since 1999.

In yesterday’s announcement the club further stated Cartledge will remain on the Board of Directors and continue to support Forest’s growth strategy off the pitch.
Saying he wanted to spend more time running his family property business, Cartledge said it had been “an honour and a privilege” to hold the chairmanship.
