It’s no change for Nottinghamshire – as every MP keeps their seat in the 2015 General election.
It may have been a bad night for the Labour Party nationally but in Nottinghamshire all eight of the sitting MPs will be returning to Westminster.
The main casualties were the Liberal Democrats, the party’s candidates reached no higher than fourth place in all 11 constituencies.
UKIP improved their share of the vote, coming third in every constituency.
After winning the last election with a majority of less than 200, Gloria De Piero went against the national trend and increased her majority in Ashfield by over 18 per cent.
Despite rumours of her being a potential Labour leader, she said was only interested in the people of Ashfield.
Prior to the election, exit polls suggested that Labour’s Nottingham South candidate Lilian Greenwood was at risk of losing her seat. She increased her majority, finishing nearly 7,000 votes ahead of Conservative candidate Jane Hunt.
In Gedling, Labour candidate Vernon Coaker had a nervous wait for the declaration. This was one of the most highly contested seats in Nottinghamshire and the one Labour was the most afraid of losing. However he triumphed with 20,307 votes. Carolyn Abbot, Conservative was in second place with UKIP’s Lee Waters in third.
Conservatives Mark Spencer was expected to lose his seat in Sherwood. But he ended up with an improved majority, polling 22,833 votes.
Another target seat for Labour was Broxtowe where Anna Soubry has been the MP since 2010. But the Conservative candidate eased to victory with 24,163 votes – a majority of 4.287.
Labour’s Nick Palmer trailed in second with 19,876 and it was another third for UKIP and candidate Frank Dunne who received 5,674 votes.
Veteran politician Kenneth Clarke had a comfortable victory in the safe Conservative seat of Rushcliffe. He’s been a Member of Parliament since 1970.
