‘Half ale half wine’ drink created by Castle Rock brewery

Nottingham brewers have come up with a drink which is being billed as half wine and half ale.

The creation is a 7.7 per cent pale ale and white wine hybrid from Castle Rock, and will be called New Era.

The creator, Dan Gilliland, came up with the idea when he visited a pub with a friend.

He said, “It hasn’t been released to the public but it has been tried in our brewery and the general view is that people think it works really well.

it is nothing like anything Castle Rock has brewed before

“I think it’s delicious and I am very excited to see what the public think.

“It may be brewed at Castle Rock but it is nothing like anything Castle Rock has brewed before.”

We took New Era to the Canal House pub today, where it got mixed reactions from punters.

Only three barrels have been produced of the drink, but if it is successful then more will be produced.

It will be launched at the Canal House at 5pm on January 21.

Ian Mackintosh, malt store operative for the brewery, said: “I think it is good that somebody like Dan is pushing for new things, working here means I get to try lots of different flavours and I do like the New Era drink.”

This unique blend is difficult to find in the UK and has never been done before in a cask. It will be visiting other cities and anyone can find out where it is by following @traffic_street.
