Video: Sukhpreet Singh giving food and drink to a homeless man in Notts
A West Bridgford landlord filmed himself looking after a homeless man in the city after he was left shocked by how others treated him.
Sukhpreet Singh said he saw the rough sleeper on a bench on Mount Street, off Maid Marian Way, on Monday night.
And when he saw a group of young people ‘laughing’ at the man as they walked by, he decided to help.
“It just felt wrong when I saw that,” he said.
“I thought I should go over and ask if he was alright because he didn’t look that well in the heat – it was 32 Celsius and he hadn’t eaten for 15 hours.”
Sukhpreet, who rents out several residential properties and sells cars, then bought the man pizza and a drink and filmed himself delivering it.
“I decided to film it as I wanted to raise awareness of the importance of looking after people who are in worse off positions” he said.
“I made the video to put out the word about people wasting their money – it’s easy to waste money on food and drink when there are people out there who need it.”
Sukhpreet was born in India before moving to the UK as a child, and says he comes from a ‘poor background’.
“I’ve been through it – I’ve seen my mother starving; even though I’m an entrepreneur now I see the pain that others are going through still.
“I’ve been working from a very young age, even when I went to school at the age of 11 or 12, I would have a paper round or be stacking shelves.”
Sukhpreet also works with a volunteer charity giving out food three nights every week to those who need it.
“People from all ages and every religion comes down to either help out or collect some of the free food.
“There’s always a massive queue and it’s popular but whatever food is left, we go out and hand it out to people.
“I’ve been doing this for five years or so now and it’s important to give back as I’ve been there.
“We really need to think about people that live on the street.”
