Labour takes control of Broxtowe Borough Council

Cllr Milan Radulovic

The Labour Party has taken control of Broxtowe Borough Council after a major election which sees the party gain control for the first time since 2003.

The Labour group gained 26 seats out of a possible 44 in the May 4 election, compared to the 14 seats it held after 2019.

The Conservative Party gained 10 seats while five Liberal Democrats and three Independents were also elected.

The Labour Party last controlled Broxtowe Borough Council in 2003.

Labour gained three seats in Kimberley, which was previously run by two Conservatives and one Independent councillor.

Labour candidates Chris Carr, Andy Cooper and William Mee won seats – meaning that Shane Easom, the councillor for Kimberley was ousted.

And prominent Tory councillor Richard Jackson, leader of the Conservative Group, lost his seat after he gained the same number of votes as fellow Conservative councillor Halimah Khaled.

Ruth Hyde, Chief Executive at Broxtowe Borough Council, drew Halimah Khaled’s name out of a hat in a tense moment at the election count today.

And in Attenborough & Chilwell East, Labour councillors gained three seats from the Conservatives – meaning that Eric Kerry and Trish Roberts-Thompson lost their seats.

Broxtowe has 20 wards and 130 candidates were nominated to contest the election for 2023.

Since the 2019 elections, the council has been run by a coalition, including the Labour Party, Liberal Democrats and Independents.

Following the 2019 elections, 19 conservatives, 14 Labour, seven Liberal Democrats, three Independents and one Ashfield Independent were elected to sit on the council.
