The retirement apartments would allow older people to live independently

Plans have been submitted for a large retirement living complex in Daybrook.

If approved, it will be located on vacant brownfield land behind the Premier Inn on Mansfield Road.

The project will include 51 self-contained apartments for people aged 60 and over.

The three-storey L-shaped building will be built around a large residents garden and will also include a communal lounge, a mobility scooter store and guest suites.

The complex will be designed to accommodate disabled people throughout, while letting them live independently.

There will also be a house manager and an alarm call system.

Access to the site will be from Sir John Robinson Way, with a new 18-space car park created.

Developer McCarthy Stone says there is an acute shortage of retirement housing in the area which this will help to meet.

Application documents state: “The development will offer Daybrook’s ageing population with the opportunity to downsize into a well-tailored living environment while still enabling residents to enjoy their independent lifestyles.”

It adds there are some derelict remains of previous buildings on the site, which would be demolished if the project went ahead.

The developer is proposing 36 one-bedroom and 15 two-bedroom apartments, connected by heated corridors.

It says it hopes to begin construction as soon as permission is granted.

The site is bordered on its other sides by Aldi to the south, Wickes to the north and trees to the west.

The application is currently available to view and comment on Gedling Borough Council’s website.
