Autistic children in Hucknall have been given the chance to take part in Lego therapy sessions to help them with their socialisation.

The Lego building sessions are being held at Hucknall charity Indigo Kids which provides a range of services for Autistic children and their families.

They have teamed up with architect company CPMG, based in Warser Gate and structural and civil engineers company Curtins on Ropewalk to provide the therapy as part of the Opportunities Fund that aims to create links between Nottingham charities and businesses.

The weekly sessions have helped around ten children between the ages of five and 16 improve their communication and social interaction.

The project is in its second year and is being led by a psychology specialist and the group sessions which launched in March will be taking place over ten weeks.

CPMG architect Samantha Worrall who has a specialism in special education needs said:  “The children absolutely loved the Lego building sessions which are great for teaching team work, socialisation and concentration on a particular task.”

The children got the chance to work on their own Lego models with instructions on what to build as well as working together in a group to build whatever they wanted from the Lego pieces.

Ms Worrall said it was lovely to see how well the children who attended last year adapted to the task and how many improved their concentration and ability to work in a team.

She added: “Ten weeks of dedicated lessons can make a real difference to socialisation skills, problem solving abilities and rational thinking.”

“Its a really valuable project that makes a real difference to children and families  affected by Autism.”

Sara Harraway, a director at CMPG

Dave Strong, a director at Curtins said that with one in 100 children being affected by autism the cause is fantastic and hopes that it provides real benefits to all the families involved.
