Man arrested over alleged child abduction attempt at Beeston house

Police have arrested a man on suspicion of child abduction after reports someone entered the home of a young girl in Beeston.

Officers were called to reports of a man behaving suspiciously in the area at around 4.30pm on Wednesday (July 26).

A member of the public called to say someone had approached and followed a girl before entering a house.

Residents helped find and detain a suspect nearby before police arrived to arrest him.

The 36-year-old was arrested on suspicion of child abduction and remains in police custody where he is being questioned by officers.

Neighbourhood Inspector Steve Wragg said: “The reports made to us were very concerning and we deployed police units urgently to search for and locate the individual.

“An image was circulated to officers and, with the assistance of diligent members of the public, a man matching the original description was located and swiftly arrested.

“The incident will be concerning to this close community and we would like to reassure you that we are not looking for anyone else in relation to this incident and believe it to be isolated.

“We have put in place some additional patrols and would welcome anyone with information to have a chat with one of our officers or call us.

“Today we feel very much a part of this community and would like to thank the large number of people who looked out for one another and assisted us with information.

“Our investigators will now focus their attention on supporting victims, speaking to witnesses and questioning a man that we have in custody.”
