Man jailed for burglary after CCTV captured him climbing through Sainsbury’s roof

A burglar caught on CCTV breaking into a supermarket through the roof to steal scratch cards and food has been jailed for five months.
At around 6.10am on Friday (21 February) Steve McMahon was spotted climbing through the ceiling by staff at Sainsbury’s local in Waverley Street, Radford.
He stole around £200 in scratch cards, crisps, washing detergents and various food products before escaping through a fire exit.
Response officers arrived six minutes after being called, and arrested him on nearby Forest Road.
McMahon appeared at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Saturday (22 February) and pleaded guilty to burglary. He was jailed for 22 weeks.
Sergeant Karl Browne, of the Notts Police city central neighbourhood policing team, said: “A rapid response by officers on duty allowed us to catch this burglar red-handed and I’m pleased he has also been dealt with swiftly by the courts.
“Commercial burglaries are taken very seriously by the force as we understand the financial impact on businesses and the emotional impact on members of staff.
“McMahon thought he could smash his way through the roof of a supermarket and take what he wanted so I’m pleased he has now been handed a spell behind bars.”
In December 2024, burglary incidents made up 9 of 220 crimes reported in the area across the month.
