A touching memorial portrait has been unveiled to a Nottinghamshire Police dog killed while taking part in a pursuit.
Rebus, a German Shepherd, Belgian Shepherd-cross, died after being struck by a police car in a tragic accident.
He was helping officers to chase two suspects close to the Colwick Loop road in the early hours of May 18 when he was hit by a 4×4 being driven by another officer attending the incident.
He died at the scene with his handler PC Mark Plummer by his side.
Afterwards the force was contacted by a number of people who offered support, including Gloucestershire artist, Mary Mayes. She used a photograph of Rebus to create the painted portrait.
The original has been given to PC Plummer and a copy has been given to force headquarters at, Sherwood Lodge, near Arnold. It was unveiled during a small ceremony on Thursday.
Chief Constable Sue Fish said: “Everyone at Nottinghamshire Police was devastated by the tragic accident which befell Rebus back in May. Police dogs are part of the family here at Nottinghamshire Police.
“However, all of our officers, particularly our dog handlers, took great comfort in the out-pouring of support from members of the public.
“This portrait is really very, very special and will serve as a fitting tribute to Rebus.”
A second copy of the portrait will be donated to the new upgraded police dog kennels being built at Sherwood Lodge.
Notts Police launched an investigation into the incident but said at the time it was considered a tragic accident.
