Motorists are being advised to avoid Trent Bridge during rush hour for ten days because of a lane closure.

A lane is shut on the southbound side of the carriageway – the direction leaving the city – because of emergency roadworks being carried out by BT.

Nottingham City Council says the telecoms company has spotted a problem with one of its manholes on the bridge, which could lead to a road collapse if not dealt with.

The area has been sealed off while the manhole is replaced – and the city council has asked the company to check a number of other road covers on the bridge while the work is carried out to avoid more future closures.

There were heavy delays in the area around rush hour on Thursday evening – and now motorists are being advised to avoid the bridge completely at busy times.

“While these works are being undertaken and the traffic management is already on site, we have instructed BT to carry out further investigations on other manhole covers on Trent Bridge so that further disruption can be avoided.

“These emergency works are essential and unavoidable. They are expected to last ten days and we would advise motorists to use alternative routes during peak times if possible.”

If it progresses as planned the ten-day time frame means the work should be finished on Monday, July 25.

A spokesman for BT said: “We are carrying out vital work to replace and repair two manholes which will require a one lane closure. Engineers will complete the work in the shortest possible time.

“We are very sorry for any inconvenience caused to road users while this vital repair work is completed.”
