A murder investigation has been launched after a man in his twenties died after being stabbed in a Nottingham city centre street.
Notts Police were called just after 7.40pm on Saturday (September 14) to a report of the incident in Union Road, close to the junction with Mansfield Road.
Police and ambulance crews provided medical treatment to the man at the scene, but he was pronounced dead a short time later.
A cordon was still in place on Sunday morning, closing off part of Mansfield Road and causing disruption to traffic.
The man’s family have been informed, and one man has been arrested. Officers suggested the victim and his attackers knew each other.
Det Insp Justine Wilson, who is leading the investigation, said: “We have launched a murder investigation and, although our enquiries remain at an early stage, I can assure the public that uniformed officers, detectives and forensic teams are all working tirelessly to understand the circumstances surrounding this very serious case.
“While we believe those involved in this assault are known to one another, we understand the level of concern that incidents of this nature cause our communities. That is why we’re letting the public know to expect to see a large number of uniformed officers in the city centre today to offer some reassurance following this incident.
“Most of all, my thoughts are with the family of the victim who are now facing the devastating reality of coming to terms with the fact that their loved one has lost his life on our city’s streets. That, quite simply, is not acceptable and our efforts are now fully focused on understanding how this man came to lose his life – as well as identifying those responsible for his death.
“If you have any information about this assault – no matter how insignificant you may think it may seem – I would urge you to contact police as soon as possible.”
On Sunday morning the A60 Mansfield Road was still closed in both directions between its junctions with Woodborough Road and Peachey Street.
Anyone travelling in and around the city centre is being warned to expect disruption to traffic and public transport today (Sunday), as officers continue to examine the scene.
One man has been arrested in connection with the investigation, on suspicion of assisting an offender.
Anyone who witnessed the incident, believes they may have captured the assault on dashcam footage or has any information is asked to contact Notts Police on 101, quoting incident number 812 of September 14.
