National safety chiefs have confirmed they will investigate the ‘shocking’ collapse of an NCP city centre car park.

Part of a car park wall on Cumberland Place collapsed which left three vehicles hanging over the edge.

Police assisted the Fire and Rescue Service at around 4am on Saturday (August 19) and the car park remains closed.

The Health and Safety Executive have confirmed they are investigating the incident – a spokesperson said: “We are aware of the incident and are making enquiries.”

The collapse has been labelled ‘shocking’ by Nottingham City Council Leader councillor Jon Collins.

He said: “It’s shocking that such a major structural failure can have occurred in this way.

“Thankfully it happened in the early hours of Saturday morning and no-one was hurt.

“The car park is run by NCP but clearly the Council, along with other local and national agencies, will be seeking answers about what happened as quickly as possible and assurances about the safety of NCP’s other car parks in the city.”

NCP have confirmed they are also investigating the incident and confirmed the car park will be closed ‘until further notice’.

A spokesperson for NCP said: “After Saturday’s incident on our Nottingham City car park NCP are undertaking a thorough internal investigation, have informed the landlord, and will cooperate with any investigation conducted by the regulatory authorities.

“At this early stage it is inappropriate to comment any further.

“The car park will remain closed until further notice, all our Season Ticket and ParkPass customers are advised to use our nearby St James Street Car Park.”
