A new exhibition at the Lace Market Gallery which explores how people perceive mental health issues opens next week.

The exhibition ‘Women of a Nervous Disposition’ is by Nottingham artist Denise Watson and is on the perception of ‘madness’ focusing on women.

It includes a large scale figurative painting, as well as a number of intimate small scale pieces and book works.

It opens on April 20 and runs until May 18 to coincide with Mental Health Awareness week on the week starting Monday May 8.

Speaking about the exhibition, Denise said: “The women I have chosen to paint all have stories, narratives of lives once lived, whether they be real or fictional.

“The pieces of the story may be fragmented or hidden and slightly out of focus, but if we look closely we can find the missing pieces of the puzzle.”

The exhibition is the first solo exhibition from Denise since 2012 and is part of her new two year project.

Denise has been a practising artist since gaining her MA in Fine Art in 1986 and has exhibited nationally and internationally.

She has also worked on curatorial projects, artist initiatives and is a part-time Fine Art Lecturer; she is currently based at Wollaton Street Studios, Nottingham.
