New restrictions are being brought onto the Victoria Embankment to stop ‘commuter parking’ there.

Nottingham City Council is bringing in a fee of £2 from 8am until 5pm on weekdays – although it will still be free to park for up to two hours there

Evening and weekend parking will also still be free and the changes will apply from Monday, July 18.

The spaces are not for commuter parking

Councillors say the change is needed to prevent people from parking their cars along the route and leaving them all day while they go to work in the city or West Bridgford.

They say commuter parking has become more and more of a problem in the area – leaving little or no spaces for people wanting to use the Embankment park.

Nottingham City Council portfolio holder for transport Nick McDonald said: “The car parking spaces at the Embankment are intended for those who want to make use of the park and riverside area and not for commuter parking.

“We spoke to the local community and those who use the Embankment for recreational purposes during the evenings and weekends should not be disadvantaged.”

The council says clear signing and road markings will be in place explaining the new restrictions, along with instructions on how to register and pay.

All drivers – including those planning to stay under two hours – will need to register to claim two hours of free parking, after which they must pay the £2 fee.

This involves calling 0115 871 4000 and quoting the location code, or using RingGo’s website or smartphone app.
