A new three-storey student accommodation block that will house 35 students near the city centre has been approved by the council.

Nottingham City Council backed the 35-bed block, to be built at Ortzen Court in Ortzen Street, Radford, today (October 10).

The original plans submitted in April 2023 planned for the building to be four storeys high with 48 rooms across eight flats.

However, the number of bedrooms has now been reduced.

According to planning documents, all rooms will be double-sized and have en-suites with the building wrapping around a communal courtyard.

Ortzen Court was sold by the City Council in 2022, where former ward councillor, Merlita Bryan, expressed concern about the site’s future.

In previous council documents, she said: “We are suffering with an overwhelming amount of purpose-built student accommodation in the ward and would be very reluctant to see such development again.

“It would be good to see more family dwellings being built to rebuild a more sustainable and economic community.”

The site is a brownfield land currently containing two existing units. These will be demolished and the site redeveloped with building costs expected to be around £1.4m.

An open space contribution of £46,000 and an employment contribution by the developers will be provided to the council, papers add.
