Nottingham campaign group wants ‘more to be done’ about mobile phone use behind the wheel

A Nottingham campaign group has said they want ‘more to be done’ on the issue of drivers using mobile phones behind the wheel.

Greater Nottingham Transport Partnership want road users to be more aware of the dangers of using mobile phones while driving.

However new home office data has shown that the amount of drivers caught using a mobile phone behind the wheel in Nottinghamshire has dropped by half within a year.

The amount of notices issued has dropped from 590 to 297.

People need to realise they are careless when they do this

Gary Smerdon-White from the campaign group said: “Using phones behind the wheel causes massive distractions and they cause accidents.

“People need to realise they become careless while doing this.

“The worst thing of all is that, as was said about the lorry driver recently, you are actually driving blind, you have forgotten what you are doing, you’re not even looking at the road.”

Mr Smerdon-White’s comments come off the back of a lorry driver being sentenced to 10 years after causing death by dangerous driving by using a mobile phone at the wheel in Berkshire.

He killed a mother and three children because he was distracted scrolling through music on his phone at the time of the crash.
