Nottingham hospitals volunteer of the year has bus named in his honour

One of Nottingham’s longest-serving hospital volunteers has had a bus named after him.
Roy Brooks-Porter has been volunteering for 15 years after retiring, and is known for his huge impact on wards at Nottingham City Hospital, supporting patients and staff tirelessly.
On a day-to-day basis Roy prepares patients for meals, gives them refreshments, liaises with staff and does fetch and carry tasks. He also runs raffles and fundraisers hosted for patients.
In November he was given Nottingham University Hospitals Volunteer of the Year award. On Monday an NCT bus bearing his name was unveiled to a crowd of friends, family and co-workers before it went out on service.
Roy said: “I’m blown away to have an incredible thing like this bus and the volunteer award. I can’t thank the NHS or the bus company more than I have done its hard to explain, its from no experience to work in this place it’s stunning.
“In the hospital a lot of people have lost their wives or husbands, a lot of people need different things, I’ve been lucky enough to give it to them.
“If you talk about the NHS and they say the NHS is broken, it’s like a slab of gold in this place, have you ever tried to break gold?”
Kerry Harper, NHS Voluntary Services Manager said: “We recruited Roy put him in the ward – it’s fabulous to see him get this award. He’s a lovely man very humble reliable and helpful, it couldn’t happen to a nicer gentlemen.”

His sons and grandchildren were in attendance for the unveiling of the bus, which will be a 24, 25, 26 or 27 bus depending on the day.
David Porter said: “He’s very humble with the people. Its ‘just Roy’ he says to the patients, he doesn’t want any praise in there and he makes a difference to a lot of people’s lives.”
Matt Brooks-Porter said: “It’s great, it is recognising the people who don’t get recognised, that’s the idea, the people you don’t see.”
According to NCT, there are currently 23 other buses named after individuals throughout Nottingham, all for those who have made a significant contribution to the city in various ways.
