Nottingham snooker player Michael Holt defeated former world number one Neil Robertson in the first round of the World Championship in Sheffield.

Holt defeated heavy favourite Robertson 10-6 to progress to the next round, where he will face another world champion in Mark Williams later in the week.

Robertson became the fifth former champion to be knocked out of this year’s World Championship.

It was a high quality game with both players scoring tons, and Holt scoring a tournament high 140 break.

It is the first game that Holt has won at the Crucible in over a decade and follows a successful start to 2016 in which he has already beaten Ronnie O’Sullivan.

The 37-year-old, nicknamed ‘The Hitman’, is currently ranked as the 28th best player in snooker but can climb further with a good showing in this tournament.
