A teenager who overcame dyslexia to get a place at university has been named Nottingham Young Creative of the year for her creative writing.

Rebecca Constable, 19, who studies Theatre Design at Nottingham Trent University, won the title at Nottingham Playhouse on Wednesday night.

A record-breaking 350 submissions were made to the 2016 awards ceremony, now in its eighth year.

Awards were given out in 10 categories under the theme ‘Goals and Dreams’, with Rebecca named overall Young Creative of the Year.

She entered the Creative Writing category for 19 to 24 year-olds and was presented the award by Nottingham-born actress Vicky McClure.

Rebecca’s submitted piece was about overcoming dyslexia and achieving a place at university.

Rebecca, 19, said: “I wanted to show what people with dyslexia are going through because I don’t think teachers know enough about it.

“I wanted to show what kind of impact dyslexia can have on yourself and others, I didn’t give my character a name or age because I was trying to represent everyone with dyslexia and how they must be feeling.”

Nigel Cooke, chairman of the Awards, said: “Rebecca’s creative writing piece was just amazing, it was thought-provoking, emotional, and she really deserves to be named Young Creative of the Year 2016.

“The awards are all about inspiring, supporting and encouraging creativity in the young people of Nottingham.”

The winner for the visual arts aged 19 to 24 was Manel Pascual Bafluy, who entered his pottery work.

He said: “If I give you two pieces, then you have 20 minutes of my life.

“I did them on my own, it was done with dreams, having a target and reaching the target was good.”
