Boundary changes could affect where thousands of Nottinghamshire people go to cast their vote for the upcoming county council election.

Notts goes to the polls on Thursday, May 4 to decide who should hold power in local divisions and at County Hall, West Bridgford.

Labour currently has overall control with 32 members, the Conservatives have 21, the Liberal Democrats 5, Ashfield Independents 4 and the Independent Group 2, with three non-aligned independent members.

The county elections are held every four years and are traditionally a reasonably close contest, and this year’s result could be even tougher to predict because of the boundary changes.

It comes after an electoral review of Nottinghamshire by the Local Government Boundary Commission.

It led to the total number of county councillors reducing from 67 to 66 with nearly all the divisions changing in name, size or both.

The 66 councillors will represent a total of 56 divisions, which includes ten two-member divisions.

The total number of councillors representing divisions in some districts has also changed. The new arrangements are:

  • Ashfield – 10 (no change)
  • Bassetlaw – 9 (no change)
  • Broxtowe – 9 (-1)
  • Gedling – 9 (-1)
  • Mansfield – 9 (no change)
  • Newark & Sherwood – 10 (no change)
  • Rushcliffe – 10 (+1)

Anthony May, Returning Officer for the election, said: “It’s more important than ever that people check their poll card.

“With the new boundary arrangements coming into force for the first time, many people will see changes to the name of their electoral division, the area it covers and possibly the polling station they must go to to cast their vote.”

The formal countdown to the election began on Monday (March 27) , when the official Notice of Election was published.

Polling stations are open 7am to 10pm on May 4, which is a Thursday, and results will be announced at County Hall as they come in from each district on Friday, May 5.

A final result is expected around lunchtime on the Friday.
