Nottinghamshire County Show opens England’s rural event season

Crowds enjoyed the sunshine at Newark Showground as the Nottinghamshire County Show appeared for its 133rd year.

Prize livestock, the best of rural food and drink, live displays and even a Battle of Britain flypast entertained this year’s visitors over Saturday and Sunday.

Jane Olney, show manager, said: “There is something for everyone, we are the first show of the season, so they come to us in order to start their season, they’re gaining points and qualifying points for the rest of the year.

“It’s great to see the number of people we have got on site and to see people really happy, smiling, buying things, they’re having a great time, we have a tremendous amount of attractions as well.”

This year’s event also included the famous sheep show, show jumping, children’s entertainment, music and a gun display.

The show aims to promote agriculture, food and trade in Nottinghamshire, and showcased the new Lady Eastwood Pavilion in the floral arts section, which has been expanded.

Jane, who has been involved in the running of the show for four years, said: “We don’t try to get bigger, we try and bring a change, to the activities in the main ring particularly each year, while bringing new things into familiar areas.”

Some of the action in this year’s main ring included lawn mower racing, mounted pony games, Grove and Rufford hounds.
