Notts County’s Jon Stead wins League 2 player of the month award

Notts County’s in-form striker Jon Stead has won the Sky Bet League 2 player of the month award for September.

Stead scored five league goals in September with all five coming in the last three league games.

The striker scored two away at Cheltenham, one at home to Leyton Orient and two away at Exeter with Notts winning each of those games.

He has helped propel the Magpies up to seventh in the table just three points off of second with a game in hand on all of the teams above them.

It’s only taken me 13 years to get the next one

Speaking about winning the award, Stead said: “I’ve had a decent month and scored goals but it seems as though managers win those awards and it goes horribly wrong so hopefully there’s no curse and I can carry on scoring!

“It’s not a bad award, it’s a solid, decent bit for the mantelpiece, I thought I had to give it back in a month!

“The last one I got was at Huddersfield so it’s only taken me 13 years to get the next one, so who knows, in another 13 years we could be sat here again!”

Notts manager John Sheridan says there will be no pats on the back until Stead has won three player of the month awards.

Sheridan said: “I’ll just tell him, Steady it’s only a month, don’t get carried away, three will look better on the mantelpiece than one.

“If he gets another five this month making it 10 in two months it means that we will be around where we want to be.

“They usually say if you win two or three manager of the month awards you win the title; I’ve never won one.

“When I was at Chesterfield I never won one so that’s a myth ain’t it!”

It’s fully deserved with the goals he’s scored

Sheridan is impressed with the way his striker has created the chances himself.

He said: “I’d say the only tap in he’s scored was probably at Exeter but a lot of the others he’s created himself.

“We know he has that ability, he’s played at a high level for most of his career and I’m pleased to have him as a manager in the team.

“He knows what I want from him and he’s rewarding me, hopefully that will continue and it’s fully deserved with the goals he’s scored.”
