Nottingham people have credited Prince Philip for his ‘loving support of the Queen’ after the announcement he is to retire from royal duties.

Buckingham Palace announced this morning (Thursday May 4) that the 95-year-old will no longer carry out public engagements from this autumn.

The Palace said in a statement it was the Duke’s decision backed with the support of The Queen.

The Duke of Edinburgh, who turns 96 next month, will attend previously scheduled engagements between now and August but will not accept new invitations.

His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh has decided that he will no longer carry out public engagements from the Autumn of this year. In taking this decision, The Duke has the full support of The Queen.

Prince Philip will attend previously scheduled engagements between now and August, both individually and accompanying The Queen. Thereafter, The Duke will not be accepting new invitations for visits and engagements, although he may still choose to attend certain public events from time to time.

The Duke of Edinburgh is Patron, President or a member of over 780 organisations, with which he will continue to be associated, although he will no longer play an active role by attending arrangements.

Her Majesty will continue to carry out a full list of official engagements with the support of members of the Royal Family.

Robert Jenrick took to Twitter to pay tribute to Philip’s “lifetime of public service”.

Rommy Marsh Tweeted: “After 95 years, Prince Philip is retiring. Very well deserved.”

Pete Hayward was supposed to meet the Duke at the end of the year and was disappointed with the news.

Dan Garlick tweeted: “Had the honour of speaking [to] Prince Philip on collecting my Gold @DofE Award. Top man.”

All royal staff from across the country were called for a sudden meeting at the Palace this morning, sparking speculation about the cause.
