Prime Minister Rishi Sunak calling the general election at Downing Street on Wednesday

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has announced the UK will vote in a General Election on Thursday, July 4.

Mr Sunak confirmed the polling date in an announcement outside 10 Downing Street shortly after 5.15pm today (Wednesday, May 22).

It puts an end to months of speculation about when the vote will take place after some belief the election would be held in the autumn.

It comes on the day the Bank of England confirmed inflation had fallen to 2.3 per cent – down from 3.2 per cent – which is close to the Government and the Bank’s two per cent target.

Speaking at the podium, the Prime Minister said: “These uncertain times call for a clear plan and bold action to charter a course to a secure future.

“You must choose in this election, who has that plan, who is prepared to take a bold action necessary to secure a better future for our country and our children?”

But Labour leader Keir Starmer said shortly after the announcement: “If they get another five years they will feel entitled to carry on as they are… nothing will change.”

“It’s time for change,” he added. “Our offer is to reset our economy and our politics.”

Nottingham and Nottinghamshire have eleven parliamentary constituencies that will decide who becomes their next MP on July 4.

That includes Ashfield, Bassetlaw, Broxtowe, Gedling, Mansfield, Nottingham East, Nottingham North and Kimberley, Nottingham South, Newark, Rushcliffe and Sherwood.

Parliamentary boundaries have changed slightly due to a review in 2022. Residents should check which constituency they are in when poll cards arrive through letterboxes ahead of the election.
