The Falcon, Canning Circus

Address: 1 Alfreton Road, Nottingham, NG7 3JE

Pubs come and go, and a few years ago it was far from certain whether The Falcon would survive, with a succession of short-term managers. Thankfully, things have changed for the better and this lovely little place is enjoying a well-earned revival.

On the bar, you’ll find up to seven real ales, usually impeccably kept. This isn’t a micro pub, but any more than 25 customers and it gets to be a bit of a squeeze. A real fire in the corner and a cosy snug make this an ideal bolt hole on a cold winter’s night.

The current management seem to have judged the highly competitive Canning Circus market well. It’s a no-nonsense boozer that doesn’t attempt anything too fancy.

Music? Some Morris Dancers invaded once during the summer, but don’t let that put you off.

Food? Sunday roasts – and much cheaper than some surrounding outlets. Cold bar snacks available at other times.

Customers? A slightly more mature demographic than elsewhere at Canning Circus, who can still remember the taste of the original Shippo’s beer served at the Falcon.

Opinion? In many locations, the Falcon would be everything you ever wanted in a pub and you’d never go anywhere else. But this is a hugely competitive area. Despite that, the Falcon continues to offer good value and choice. And usually great beer.
