Residents have been allowed to return to their homes inside a block of Nottingham flats where a serious fire broke out.

The blaze started at Raleigh Square, at the corner of Raleigh Street and Gamble Street, Radford, just after 3:30pm on Tuesday (March 21).

Fire could be seen coming out from the windows of the flats on the top floor of the building.

Firefighters had the blaze under control within an hour but several people who were evacuated from the building had to stay elsewhere overnight.

Landlord Metropolitan, which owns parts of the block, said: “The majority of residents have returned to their homes today (Wednesday) – and we continue to provide information and support.

“The flats in the block are either owned or part-owned by the residents, those who have not been able to return to their homes have arranged to stay at hotels, or with friends and family.

“A number of owners privately rent to students and their universities have offered to provide temporary accommodation as required.”

Damage caused by the fire to the top flat.

Russel Sisson, a resident who lives near the affected flats said: “I was cooking dinner and noticed grey smoke and I could hear a fire alarm.

“When I came outside I could see fire and flames coming from the building and debris falling.”

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service have launched a joint investigation with the police to find out what caused the fire.

Station Manager, Tom Clark said: “We have to keep an open mind, it is a potential crime scene.

“The fire was very severe last night and currently we are looking for evidence into what happened.”
