Robin Hood Marathon: Paralympian Richard Whitehead’s five top survival tips

Thousands of professional and amateur runners will be sweating their way across the city this weekend, as they embark on the Ikano Robin Hood marathon.

Besides the epic half and full distances, every runner faces challenges including mental mountains, hitting the infamous ‘wall’ and worrying about what to eat.

Nottingham Paralympian Richard Whitehead MBE shared his insider tips with us to help the day go more smoothly and get you up to speed.

The athlete set records for the fastest marathon for a double amputee and has won two Paralympic 200m gold medals.

He secured his medals at the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympics.

1. Have a smile on your face

Richard recommends taking in the crowds cheer to get you through the course.

He says: “Enjoy the occasion, you’ll get a lot of support as you go round.”

2. Remember why you are doing it

“I always think about the reason why i’m doing the event and the people who have  supported me in the past, they will get you through the hard times.”

“Success isn’t about coming first, it’s about raising lots of money and doing your best.”

3. Don’t overload on the carbs

“I would recommend eating small amounts of carbs.”

4. Don’t change your routine or clothing

“Don’t do anything that you don’t normally do, don’t wear new trainers.”

5. Get there early

Richard urges runners to plan ahead.

He says: “Get to the start line as quickly as possible.”

The full marathon course is a gruelling 26 miles, while the half marathon covers 13 miles.

Those preparing to tackle the half marathon will pass through Woollaton Park.

Full marathon runners will cover the same route before crossing Notts landmark Trent Bridge and passing through Colwick Country park, before heading back to Victoria Embankment.
