The Robin Hood Pageant at Nottingham Castle has been cancelled over fears high weekend storm winds could put visitors in danger.

The British Rowing Senior Championships, due to take place at the National Watersports Centre, Holme Pierrepont, have also been called off.

Winds of up to 45mph are forecast for Notts on Saturday as rough weather over the Atlantic moves across the UK.

Storm Brian will bring strong winds over Wales, north-west England and most of southern England. Nottinghamshire is currently outside of a yellow weather warning area indicating where the worst of the weather will be – but will still face unusually blustery conditions.

A large part of the pageant was due to be held in a tented village among the trees in the castle grounds.

A city council statement said the event will be held in March instead, adding: “It has been decided that the storm and the damage it could cause poses too much of a risk to people attending the event, particularly families with children.

“Due to the castle’s elevated and exposed position, it is standard practice for parts of the grounds to be closed where high winds are predicted.”

The pageant has been rescheduled for the weekend of March 10-11 at the castle.

Tickets already purchased will still be valid for the rearranged event, and people who are unable to make the revised dates can apply for a refund from where they bought the tickets.

A council spokesman said: “We’re really disappointed that we’ve had to reschedule this year’s Pageant. It’s not a decision we’ve taken lightly but we can’t take any risks particularly where the safety of families and children is concerned.

“The rescheduled Pageant next Spring will still be fantastic event and we look forward to seeing everyone there.”

The council is advising people using the city’s parks over the weekend to take particular care in areas with trees.

An assessment is being carried out to decide if any parks need to be temporarily closed, the spokesman added.

The organising committee of the British Rowing Senior Championships said the event had been called off in the “best interests of fairness and safety of all competitors, spectators and exhibitors”.

A statement from the organisers read: “The Race Management Group looked at all options available and it was unanimously agreed that this is the only course of action given the current weather forecast.

“British Rowing and the British Rowing Senior Championships Organising Committee are fully committed to delivering the best possible Championships experience and we do not believe this is possible given the current forecast.

“The expected strong winds will mean that the course at the National Water Sports Centre will be unfair and unsafe to compete on. We are also very concerned about the increased risk of towing trailers in the forecast conditions.”
