Neil Clarke has stood down as leader of Rushcliffe Borough Council after holding the position for more than a decade.

The Conservative member said the council was “entering a new chapter”, which meant it was time for someone else to hold the role.

Cllr Clarke’s decision comes less than three weeks after he won a seat on Nottinghamshire County Council in the May 5 local elections.

“I’m proud to have represented Rushcliffe on both a local and national level for the past twelve years but the time is right for me to step down as leader,” he said.

“This year has seen us move into the brand new Rushcliffe Arena and, with the new building, comes a new chapter in the council’s history, which is why I’ve decided to hand over the reins to someone else.”

Councillor Clarke was first elected to the borough council in 1986 and will continue to represent the Radcliffe on Trent ward as a borough councillor.

He first became leader of the authority in May 2005.

Rushcliffe Borough Council is holding its annual meeting tomorrow (May 25) when a new council leader will be chosen.
