Seven former Nottingham City Councillors are to be nominated as Honorary Aldermen and Alderwomen in recognition of their service.

The prestigious title is bestowed on elected officials who have provided outstanding services to their local authority.

Councillors have put forward seven names of their former colleagues for consideration at an extraordinary meeting on Monday, November 13.

The group has served for a combined total of 120 years, often in  leadership roles including Lord Mayor and deputy leader.

David Trimble was nominated for his contribution to major leisure projects during his 29 years of service. His leadership saw major investment brought to Nottingham Castle, leisure centres and the city’s green spaces.

Eunice Campbell-Clark sat on the council for 34 years, and held several portfolios on the Executive. In 2016 – 2018,  she was elected as the first Caribbean woman to represent the Congress of Regions.

Merlita Bryan represented the Arboretum area of the city for 16 years, with particular service to education and recognising the achievements of Nottingham’s black and ethnic minority communities.

Sally Longford served as deputy council leader for three of her 12 years in office, showing notable leadership during the pandemic. She was also a keen advocate of carbon neutrality and tackling climate change.

Rosemary Jacobs (formerly Healy) represented Mapperley ward for 12 years from 2011. Her many notable positions include representing the city as Lord Mayor during the difficult days of the Covid pandemic.

Anne Peach represented the Radford area for 10 years, during which time she fought to protect local amenities and ensure good governance on the Scrutiny panel.

Roger Steel spent eight years on the council representing the Clifton area, and served on a number of committees.

Nominees need two-thirds of members to vote in favour of them becoming an Alderman or Alderwoman.

All seven nominees left the council in May 2023.
