Broxtowe Borough Council is calling for Nottinghamshire’s highways authority to review its road networks after a motorcyclist died in Stapleford.

Concerns have been aired about the influx of new homes being built in Stapleford and Bramcote resulting in more cars on local roads.

Issues also include lack of parking spaces and the need for more pedestrian crossings next to schools.

Last week, a 40-year-old motorcyclist was involved in a crash near the new Aldi supermarket in Nottingham Road at around 1.16pm on Friday, August 13.

He died at Queen’s Medical Centre five days later. It is not yet known what caused the crash and police are still investigating.

But councillors are now calling on Nottinghamshire County Council to have a closer look at the area, especially as new homes are still being built.

This includes 178 new homes in Coventry Lane, 15 new homes on the former Moults builders’ yard in Nottingham Road and 30 homes near St John’s C of E Primary School.

Cllr Richard MacRae (Independent), who represents Stapleford North at Broxtowe Borough Council, said streets such as Pasture Road, Brookhill Road, Ilkeston Road, Hickings Lane, Melbourne Road and Frederick Road all need repair work.

He said: “Issues are people speeding. Some of these houses were built years ago and not everyone has got lots of places to park.

“Grass verges are therefore being wrecked. They are not made for parking on. It is not by choice they are parking there, it is because they do not have a choice.

“More people are also working from home, and it is easy to jump in your car and nip out so there are more vehicles on the road. I just think traffic management needs looking at by the county council.

“There is a lot of development happening in the area and things need to be looked at. Pasture Road and Aldi need a pedestrian crossing.”

Cllr Milan Radulovic (Lab), leader of Broxtowe Borough Council, said there has been “a total lack of investment.”

He said the bill for road improvements can’t just be picked up by the county council but needs extra investment from central Government.

He said: “Places like Bramcote and Stapleford are having an uplift in housing and so we need to look if the road structure, footpaths and cycle ways meet the grade.

“There is a total lack of investment. It is not just tinkering with a few roads and putting in traffic calming measures, that’s needed. It is millions of pounds of investment.”

Gary Wood, Head of Highways and Transport at Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “We are deeply saddened to hear of the fatal collision on Nottingham Road in Stapleford.

“As with any incident of this nature, we work closely with the police who lead on the investigation to determine the circumstances.

“Once that has been concluded our Safer Highways team, who monitor and investigate all injury accidents in the county, will action any recommendations or carry out our own further investigations as necessary.

“They look for any recurring patterns in the contributory factors relating to the accidents and where appropriate, develop new schemes to reduce these in the future.

“Recommendations of further safety measures on the highway can then be made where necessary.”
