A teenage racing driver who had both of his legs amputated at the QMC after a crash has thanked the Nottingham medics who treated him, saying he would have died without their expertise.

Billy Monger, from Surrey, crashed into another car, which had broken down on the track at racing speed at Donington Park on during a British Formula 4 race on April 16.

He was then airlifted to the QMC, which is home to a regional trauma centre, and kept in an induced coma for days, but has since woken up.

Billy posted an update on his Facebook profile about his condition, thanking the people that saved his life and also paying tribute to his sister Bonny, who ‘kept him fighting’.

His post read: “A huge thank you to each and every one of you!

“Your kind words have given me and my family the strength to get through this past week.

“The love and generosity of our motorsport family, fans, and everyone that has supported me is awesome and truly inspirational.

“The marshals, medics, doctors, air ambulance and extraction crews at Donington along with all the staff at Queen’s Medical Centre – what can I say? Without you guys I wouldn’t be here today!

“I will always thank you all for saving my life!

“The one true hero of this tragic event has been my sister, Bonny who gave me the will to keep fighting, a value that I will continue to hold now… and for the rest of my life.”
