More than £12,000 has so far been raised towards treatment for terminally ill police officer Sergeant Phil Hogg who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last July.

The officer and his family have also been overwhelmed by the offers of fundraising from members of the public, and colleagues from across policing.

Phil was told he only had months to live. Determined to fight the disease he underwent significant surgery towards the end of last year and travels from his home in Arnold every fortnight to receive chemotherapy.

Supported by his wife Adele and two children Robert, 26, and Madeleine, 15, an appeal was launched on Friday (9 September) to help raise £60,000 to send Phil to the Hallwang Clinic in Germany, a private oncology clinic, for Immunotherapy Treatment – a treatment not available in the UK.

They are confident that they can get Phil into remission.

I want to thank everyone for their kindness and generous donations

Phil has worked for the police for 29 years and has been pleasantly surprised by the reaction he’s got.

He said: “We have been totally overwhelmed by people’s generosity and willingness to help us. In only 24 hours we saw the fund get to £8,000 and that figure continues to grow – it is unbelievable.

“I want to thank everyone for their kindness and generous donations.

“Words cannot describe how grateful I am. It has been a difficult time, especially for the family, but seeing how many people care gives us hope.

“People are willing to take the time and effort to respond and have donated with generosity that is frankly without equal.”

Faces from Phil’s past and present are included on the list of people who have donated to his cause.

“Going through the list of those who have donated to my cause, it is lovely to recognise names of friends and colleagues who I have had the pleasure to meet over the years.

“The list also includes people who do not know me or my family but have donated and those that have donated anonymously.

“What can I say to everyone? Thank you so, so much. You have helped to give us hope that we can achieve our target and shown the inherent goodness of human nature.”
