The Ashes: Day 2 of the Nottingham Test

After an incredible first day at Trent Bridge, England have continued to dominate, despite a flurry of wickets early on.

Stuart Broad took 8-15 as England bowled Australia out for 60 and an unbeaten century from Joe Root and a half century from Johnny Bairstow left England 274-4 at the end of the first day.

Despite England’s strong position, 4 wickets fell in the first hour of the day with the ball continuing to swing at an overcast Trent Bridge.

The first man to depart was Joe Root after an excellent 130. He was tempted into playing a ball outside off stump by Mitchell Starc and was caught behind by Peter Nevill. 297-5.

After some excellent shots by night-watchman Mark Wood, he was eventually  dismissed by Starc for 28.  A beautiful in-swinging yorker sent Wood’s leg stump cartwheeling out of the ground. 306-6.

Jos Buttler was the next man to fall victim to a Mitchell Starc yorker as he was caught out by the late swing and his off stump went flying. Starc’s 6th wicket of the innings. 320-7.

Shortly after, Ben Stokes feathered a delivery down the leg side and was caught by Nevill off the bowling of Josh Hazlewood. 332-8.

Stuart Broad and Moeen Ali put on a quick 58 between them, including a huge 6 down the ground from Ali . The partnership came to an end when Ali was caught at slip by a diving Steve Smith.  390-9.

England declared on 391-9 with a lead of  331. Nottinghamshire’s Stuart Broad ended 24* with Steven Finn 0*. Mitchell Starc was the pick of the bowlers for the visitors, finishing with figures of 6-111.

Australia faced 3 overs before lunch and went in 14-0 at the break.
