Video: Notts woman training in environmental chamber for North Pole run

A Nottingham woman with a heart condition is braving some of the coldest temperatures on earth to and run a half marathon at the North Pole.

To get herself ready, Regina O’Reilly has been training in a specially-designed freezer at Nottingham Trent University.

The long-distance specialist already has two London Marathons and the Boston and New York marathons under her belt, raising tens of thousands of pounds for charity.

On April 9 she will take on her toughest and chilliest challenge yet – the North Pole Marathon on the frozen waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

Regina had been training for the full marathon distance but is going for the half option of the event after she was diagnosed with a heart condition in November.

On Friday she trained inside the environmental chamber at Nottingham Trent University’s Clifton campus, running on a treamill at -10C to get used to the sub-zero temperatures she will face in April.

“Things we’ll have to look out for are polar bears for one, and we have to make sure you don’t freeze but also that we don’t overheat under the layers.

“I’m sure the first lap we’ll all be really cold but as you heat up you have to make sure the sweat doesn’t turn to ice.”
