Road safety experts have reminded Nottinghamshire motorists to take extra care in the evenings – because the Easter clock change brings more children onto roads.
Nottinghamshire County Council says during the Easter holidays figures show more children are out and about and on streets later – because of the lighter evenings.
The UK swaps to British Summer Time on Sunday March 27 at 1am , which means people should put clocks forward an hour.
People need to take extra care
Zena Oliver, Nottinghamshire County Council Principal Road Safety Officer, said:”Children have spent the wet winter months cooped up indoors and with the arrival of the lighter evenings will be raring to be off and out, making the most of that extra daylight.
“All road users need to take extra care, not just on main roads but in built-up residential areas and anywhere where there might be an attraction for children, such as a play park.”
Motorists are advised to be aware of children on bikes, attempting to cross the road between parked cars and also on streets close to parks.
Advice for parents
- Remind their child to give the road their full attention
- Ensure they choose a safe place to play and not the road
- Ensure their child is familiar with the route they will be taking and the safer crossing places available
- Make sure they take off headphones and not use their mobile phones when crossing the road
- Ensure they wear a cycle helmet and light/bright clothing when cycling
