Plans to further redevelop Nottingham’s Sneinton Market, including new flats and business units, have been given the green light by Nottingham City Council.

The scheme involves transformation of long-empty buildings on Avenues D and E, next to the main market area.

A three-storey building with student flats and ground floor shops will be built with further improved stalls for street food and structures for pop-up shops.

The aim is to attract more local businesses into Nottingham’s Creative Quarter district and provide places for people to shop and eat and drink.

The planning application by Carlton Street Trading was designed by Leonard Design Architects.

John Morgan, director at Leonard Design Architects, said: “We’re thrilled to now be able to move forward with the plans to regenerate Sneinton Market. The mixed-use scheme is a significant redevelopment project and further contributes to the ripple effect we’re now seeing across the city of vacant heritage buildings being given a new lease of life.

“Work will begin on the new buildings in summer 2018 and the new student accommodation is planned to launch for the beginning of the 2019/20 academic year.”

Carlton Street Trading is a family-owned development company which purchased the site from Nottingham City Council.

The project will further develop empty parts of the market.

Director Sam Burt said: “This is extremely positive news for the city of Nottingham. The Creative Quarter is a vibrant hub and Sneinton Market is set to become a central part of that with these redevelopment plans being given the go ahead.”

“As site developers, our aim has always been to make Sneinton Market a special place for the people of Nottingham and to attract more business into the area. We have already received a high level of interest in the commercial units from leading independent leisure venue operators.”

The Creative Quarter was established as a company in 2013 to drive the development of Sneinton Market, Hockley, the Lace Market and Pennyfoot Street.

Stephen Barker, CEO of Nottingham’s Creative Quarter, said: “This could be an exciting addition to Sneinton Market and Nottingham’s Creative Quarter. It would not be the final piece of the jigsaw but would go a long way towards making Sneinton Market a great destination, providing an even better food, retail and leisure experience in an increasingly lively part of the city.

“It’s another reason for people to come to Nottingham to learn, live, work and invest as the Creative Quarter plays a bigger role in Nottingham’s story. The part of Sneinton Market this development tackles could be a perfect fit for smaller, quality, independent and brand retailers looking to share in Nottingham’s success.”
