A talented Nottingham footballer who lost a leg in a hit-and-run road accident hopes to launch a new career in amputee sport.
Shachkeil Burrows, 22, moved to the UK seven years ago from Bermuda to follow his dream of making it as a pro.
But he was left devastated in July when he was the victim of a hit-and-run accident while back on the island to visit his father.
While riding as a passenger on a motorbike, a car hit him and tore off his right leg. The driver failed to stop.
Since recovering Shachkeil, who lives in Mapplerley, has been learning to move on crutches and a £50,000 fundraising appeal has been launched to pay for a new prosthetic leg which will give him full movement again.
And he now wants to re-start his career as an amputee footballer.
Shachkeil, known as Shach, said: “It’s been hard but I’ll definitely get through it. Obviously I was thinking about living – I’m not paralysed and I can still get around.
“It has affected me a bit, but it’s not torn down my spirit or anything like that. People have contacted me on Facebook and I’m looking at amputee football.”
The appeal for a prosthetic leg has already raised more than £26,000 of the £50,000 target.
