Watch: Notts animal rescue says 2017 was worst year for abandoned fake ‘micropigs’

A Nottinghamshire animal rescue has been flooded with more people than ever bringing in what they thought were ‘micropigs’ after they’ve grown too big for them.

Brinsley Animal Rescue says 2017 has been its worst year yet for people leaving the animals with them.

There are currently nine pigs staying at the farm, and staff have only re-homed one in 2017, having turned away nearly 150 because they did not have room for them.

Jon Beresford, a trustee of the farm, said: “People get a little pig, think it’s cute and cuddly, but they grow up large and on their own and that’s when the trouble starts.”

‘Micropigs’ are pigs bred to be small so they can be more easily kept as pets.

But many end up growing far larger than owners expect or sellers promise.

Anyone who keeps a pig or ‘micropig’ as a pet is considered a pig farmer by the Government and must follow set regulations.
