Notts Police have closed stations, merged departments with other forces and made officers retire to save money.

Nottinghamshire Police say they found people carrying weapons in a stop and search operation in Forest Fields on Tuesday night.

The action ran until the early hours of the morning, with officers saying it was set up to “prevent disorder after reports of tension between certain elements of the community”.

It came a week after Aqib Mazhar died after being stabbed on Russell Road in Forest Fields, although officers did not link the operation with his death.

Superintendent Ted Antill said: “The decision to implement such an order is not one we take lightly but was taken yesterday in an effort to protect people in the Forest Fields community.”

During the operation a 17-year-old was arrested in Forest Fields on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon.

The teenager was also arrested on suspicion of two alleged knife-point robbery offences and is in police custody.

A baseball bat, a mask and cannabis was also recovered during the stop and search.

Sup Antill said:”We will continue into this evening and beyond to have a high-profile presence in Forest Fields as we work to prevent any further acts of violence and reassure the local community.”

A section 60 order allows police to stop and search anyone in a certain area, when there is evidence that serious violence has or will take place.

Police have said that although there are not plans to implement another Section 60, similar level of police activity will continue on the streets of Forest Fields.
