Forecasters have issued the first Nottinghamshire weather warning for snow of the season – saying flurries are possible on Tuesday.

Temperatures are expected to dip below freezing on Monday night, with the yellow warning for snow in the county running from noon on Tuesday.

The Met Office issued the warning on Monday morning, saying the midweek weather could lead to travel disruption.

A Met Office spokesman said: “A band of rain spreading slowly in will turn to snow as it encounters cold air. Whilst this will be mainly on high ground, and heavier bursts could easily bring snow down to low levels.

“Overnight into Wednesday morning, there are concerns that heavier bursts could bring snow more widely down to low levels over parts of eastern England, though at this stage there is low confidence.”

The warning, a yellow ‘be aware’ alert, is due to end by 9am on Wednesday.

Drivers are being asked to plan ahead and there is a low risk that some villages on higher ground could be affected by road closures.

Although temperatures are expected to stay between -1 Celsius and five Celsius until Wednesday they are due to increase into double figures by the weekend.

Saturday is expected to be damp but warmer, with highs of 11 Celsius.

Nottinghamshire County Council says its gritters will be out on the roads on Monday night to counter the risk of ice on the roads.
