Woman in critical condition after crash between car and lorry closed A46

A woman is in a critical condition after sustaining life threatening injuries in a crash between a car and a lorry on the A46 in Newark.

The 63-year-old woman was cut free from the car by fire fighters and was taken to hospital by ambulance after the incident happened at around 7.30pm last night.

The male driver of the car sustained injuries that are not believed to be life threatening with the driver of the lorry unharmed.

The route between Great North Road and Farndon Road was immediately closed off in both directions but re-opened this morning at around 8.40am with traffic currently heavy in both directions.

A spokesperson for Notts Police said: “A female was cut out of her car by fire fighters and has been taken to QMC by emergency crews.

“Her injuries are life threatening and her condition has been described as critical.

“A man was also in the car and sustained injuries that are not believed to be life threatening; the lorry driver was not seriously injured.”

A spokesperson for Notts Fire & Rescue Service said: “Specialist crews from Newark and a specialist rescue team freed a woman from the car and was taken to hospital by the East Midlands Ambulance Service.

“Four fire engines attended the scene as well as the specialist units.”
