Homelessness protesters begin packing up at Cliff Road site

Activists have begun packing up a homelessness protest camp in Nottingham city centre.

A possession order against the site on Cliff Road was granted at Nottingham County Court on Thursday.

It means the city council has the right to appoint bailiffs to evict the protesters.

But on Friday only a handful of people were left at the camp and those that remained were backing tents and other items away.

They were also filling a skip parked outside the gates to the plot.

The Cliff Road site is the second camp protesters have set up in a battle which has been on-going since Christmas Eve.

Campaigners have been at the site in Cliff Road since New Year’s Day after moving from their previous camp on Station Street.

Organisers Fightback Nottingham say they want more to be done to support homeless people in Nottingham, and say the council should open up empty buildings.

The council says it has enough homeless shelters and support centres to meet demand, and that local residents have complained of noise and public urination.

Fightback says more than 20 people came to the camp saying they were homeless, and that activists are now leaving Cliff Road after helping to find housing for them all.

At a separate court hearing, the authority had already been granted a closure order against the site.
