D-Day for Notts homeless protesters

Rough sleepers who have been ordered to move from Nottingham Railway Station have now set up a second camp.

Nottingham City Council was granted a possession order to have the area in Station Street cleared this morning.

Some members of the group sleeping rough at the site had moved on to another patch over the weekend.

Around 20 tents have been set up at the second camp, which is located on Cliff Road just behind the intu Broadmarsh Centre.

Several still remained on the Station street site this morning despite the court order.

The camp had been organised by Fightback Nottingham and the protesters had been at the site since Christmas Eve.

A City Council spokesperson said: “We’re pleased some protesters have moved off Station Street but disappointed some have chosen to set up camp elsewhere.

“The fact remains there is no need for anyone finding themselves homeless in Nottingham to sleep in a tent.

“Our No Second Night out approach means we will always find emergency accommodation and connect those who need it with ongoing support.

“This was offered to the camp but most declined.”
