A Bramcote road will be closed until further notice after an ancient wall collapsed into it.
Town Street had already been shut since last week for gas works, before the collapse happened on Sunday night (April 9), near a corner known locally as the Devil’s Bend.
The road was due to reopen on April 18, but Nottinghamshire County Council says this is unlikely.
Investigations are being carried out to determine the cause of the collapse before any repairs start.
Part of the wall, which is several meters tall, also fell down in 2021.
Councillor Steve Carr (Ind), who represents the ward on Broxtowe District Council and Nottinghamshire County Council, says he fears the whole wall may need to replaced.
“Fortunately it was closed when it collapsed – goodness knows what would happen if there had been a car beneath it,” he said.
“The concern is that it’s compromised and could come down at any moment.
“It looks like it needs to be completely replaced. At the moment, the county council are trying to contact the landowners and find out who owns the wall.”
The ongoing closure would mean a “massive detour” through Beeston for those who are unable to walk down the road.
Cllr Carr said there had been reports of people moving the barriers aside to drive down, and urged people to respect the road closure.
A highways manager from Nottinghamshire County Council said: “We are aware of the collapsed wall on Town Street in Bramcote and our incident response team attended the site to make it safe as soon as we were alerted.
“The road had been closed since April 2 for Cadent to undertake gas utility works. These works are due to finish by April 18; however, it is likely that the road will remain closed beyond this time.
“The cause of the collapse is currently unknown, with initial investigations being inconclusive and further investigations will be required before any repairs commence.
“We will keep residents and road users informed of any developments and plans to repair the wall.”
