Carl Froch looked back on his humble beginnings as he collected another city accolade – an honorary degree from Nottingham Trent University.
The retired super middleweight world champion is now Carl Froch MBE DSc after a ceremony at the Royal Concert Hall on Tuesday.
Carl, 39, said: “I have to pinch myself sometimes – and it’s been a long journey. I’ve boxed since I was eight years old I retired just before my 37th birthday so I’d been dedicated to boxing for 30 years.
“I’ve studied at Loughborough University myself and I’ve always tried to have a wide variety of different things going off – but I’ve always been dedicated to boxing.”
Since announcing his retirement a year ago, Froch has become a regular pundit for Sky Sports boxing coverage and has also had a city tram named after him.
He has also been made an Honorary Freeman of Nottingham – not bad for a boxer who juggled jobs with his sport when starting out.

He added: “At one time I worked for NTL on Daleside Road in Colwick for a few years, I worked on building site, and in my mum’s pubs while I was growing up – but I’ve always been involved in boxing and fitness and sport.
“To dedicate yourself to one particular thing throughout your whole life – you’ll always achieve greatness provided you enjoy it. I think it was Winston Churchill who said if you can find a job you enjoy doing you’ll never work another day in your life.
“I’m very privileged – I’ve had a fantastic career with boxing and it keeps bringing me more and more than I could ever have imagined.”
Froch, who is from Gedling, was a four-time world champion – capturing the WBC title twice, the WBA (regular) title and the IBF title over his career which saw him win 33 out of 35 fights.
