Paralympian Ollie Hynd to be honoured with degree from Nottingham Trent University

Oliver-Hynd
Oliver 'Ollie' Hynd is one of the most decorated athletes in the history of sport in Nottinghamshire.

A Notts paralympic gold medallist is among a cohort of ‘inspirational achievers’ to receive honorary degrees at a city university.

Swimmer Ollie Hynd, from Mansfield, set a world-record winning gold in the 400m freestyle and also won the 200m individual medley at the Rio Paralympics last year.

He also won silver in the 100m backstroke.

He will receive an honorary Doctor of Science degree at Nottingham Trent University recognising his outstanding sporting achievements.

Olympic dressage rider Richard Davison, from Nottingham, will receive the same award.

He captained Team GB in the event at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and appeared at the 2004 games in Athens and Sydney in 2000.

The university will give honorary doctorates to 12 people from the city and county for their outstanding achievements and work.

The news comes after four-time super-middleweight world boxing champion Carl Froch received an honorary degree from the university last year.

Vice-chancellor of the university, professor Edward Peck, said: “Our honorary graduates have all excelled in their chosen fields and demonstrate the results of determination and dedication.”

Former students, including BAFTA-nominated filmmaker Jonathan Glazer and Jürgen Maier, the chief executive of global engineering firm Siemens UK, will also be honoured.

They will receive Doctor of Science awards.

Rose Thompson, director of BME Cancer Communities, will be honoured for her work raising awareness of the inequalities of black men with prostate cancer.

They will receive their awards during the university’s graduation week beginning Monday, July 17.
