Police investigating a brutal attack in Old Market Square which left a man in hospital have released pictures of two men they want to trace.
The assault took place at around 10.45pm on Wednesday outside Five Guys restaurant.
Police say the victim, a 34-year-old man, was walking along when he was approached by a man dressed in three-quarter-length trousers and wearing no top.
He punched the victim in the head, knocking him to the floor and causing a serious head injury.
The attacker walked away, leaving the victim lying bleeding on the pavement.
The man is still in the Queen’s Medical Centre, where he remains in a serious condition.
Police cordoned off the scene after the attack
Det Insp Amy Styles-Jones said: “This type of incident highlights the amount of damage which can be caused by a single punch. The victim of this attack has suffered extremely serious, potentially life-altering injuries and is still being treated in hospital.
“The image we are releasing today is quite clear and we believe there will be someone who recognises these two men.
“We know there were others present at the time of this assault and are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident, knows anything about it or who recognises the men pictured, to please get in touch.”
