The Trust that runs QMC and City Hospital have announced they will move cleaning services back under their control by the start of April.

Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) have already started to move Estates and Facilities services, such as cleaning, car parking and security back under their control.

NUH plans to have them all back in-house by the beginning of April.

Staff that are currently hired by cleaning contractors Carillion will be transferred back to NUH.

This came after NUH announced they would leave cleaning contractors Carillion in November 2016 after hospital bosses raised ‘serious concerns’ over how clean the hospitals were.

The contract had been in place since April 2014.

Chief executive of the Trust Peter Homa said: “The Trust will require a period of time to assess and action what is required to take forward these essential services and deliver the highest level of service to our patients and front line staff.”

This comes less than a month after Peter Homa and medical director of NUH Dr Stephen Fowlie announced they would retire later this year.

Member of the health and scrutiny committee councillor John Clarke said in December he ‘expected’ cleaning operations to move back under the control of QMC and City Hospital.

Speaking then, he said: “I expect there will be a clear move to change the contractor and bring it back in house.

“The problem is that it’s a massive contract – it’s not just a case of flicking a switch off, you’ve got to work out how you do that, the rights of the worker, there’s a lot of things to sort out.”
